Pandemic Management Using Internet of Things and Big Data – A Security and Privacy Perspective

Pandemic management via technologies like Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, 5G, Blockchain have made huge impact across the world in these difficult times. The current pandemic situation has given rise to many behavioral and socio-economical changes in our society. This has also given rise to the use of technologies like Internet of Things, artificial intelligence to solve the real-world problems of COVID-19 pandemic. This chapter discusses the security and privacy issues of using IoT for pandemic management especially the security and privacy challenges of contact tracing using IoT and mobile phones. Identifying the infected individuals and those who have been in contact with the infected individual has become a major concern among the government organizations and is termed as “Contact tracing”. This process of contact tracing prevents the community spreading of the disease. Many governments are trying to identify the infected individuals using contact tracing mobile applications that are equipped with GPS, Bluetooth or NFC devices. This chapter will discuss the security and privacy methodology followed in contact tracing IoT applications all around the world and discusses the privacy issues faced by the users of contact tracing IoT applications.
