Multi-Modal Communication

Alison Battye · 2022

Non-verbal communication enhances our spoken communication. Our non-verbal communication is often more spontaneous and more powerful than our words. Communication partners need to keep an eye on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) users’ non-verbal communication, so that they correctly pick up on these signals which may enhance the message. Communication is not just about the literal content of a message. The warmth, engagement and sense of connection between the people communicating is just as important as the words and phrases. By enabling multi-modal communication, we are maximising the chances that communication will be successful. The use of AAC supports the foundations of communication. Attention and listening and receptive language is supported. AAC stimulates vocabulary growth and grammatical awareness.
