Reporting adverse drug reactions
JAMA · 1966
The Registry on Adverse Reactions, sponsored by the Council on Drugs of the American Medical Association, provides a service for physicians by assembling, evaluating, and storing information on adverse reactions to drugs. The Registry retrieves and correlates such information and alerts physicians at the earliest possible moment when the use of a drug is found to be associated with a suspected potential hazard. This information is disseminated in AMA publications and elsewhere by such means as articles, summaries and tabulations, and in replies to inquiries. When a report is received by the Registry, it first is reviewed by the staff for completeness; if it is incomplete, the reporting physician is asked for additional information or clarification. The complete report then is assigned for evaluation to the appropriate panel or panels of the Registry.
