Foundational Keyboard Skills for Music Majors

Emily Boyce · 2022

This chapter is designed for students whose major is an instrument other than piano, and will include strategies for being successful in piano classes. An overview of why keyboard skills are important begins the chapter. Students are then guided in making decisions about purchasing a keyboard instrument. Instruction is included on the appropriate physical approach to healthy piano playing and the skills developed in piano classes are discussed and explained. These include sight reading, playing chord progressions, collaborative piano transposition, improvisation, and playing repertoire. Finally, strategies for practicing these keyboard skills are presented. Questions for discussion and an assignment are included.
