The service deployment of IoT applications on fog computing platforms improve overall performance especially for time-sensitive applications. It also saves network bandwidth and cloud computing resources. Several researches have been published in literature to exploit fog resource capabilities for execution and supporting of IoT applications, but inefficient service deployment of IoT applications leads resource dissipation, additional bandwidth usage, and high rate of power consumption. From a power management viewpoint, the deployment of services on the minimum number of fog and cloud nodes decrease the degree of reliability although it significantly decreases power consumption. To make a good compromise between the required reliability degree of IoT applications and Fog-Cloud power consumption, a cuckoo search based algorithm is extended to avoid one point of failure phenomenon and to improve applications’ reliability. To this end, the proposed algorithm distributes less time-sensitive services on cloud nodes and the time-sensitive ones are deployed on fog nodes, but at the same time it tries to deploy them on the appropriate number of nodes. The simulation results prove that the proposal significantly decreases total power consumption while it meets high level of reliability requested for IoT applications in comparison with other comparative state-of-the-arts.
