This chapter discusses how to install the GNOME desktop environment on a computer running an Ubuntu Linux system. GNOME allows to use of a different desktop environment with a different layout and features like search optimization, improved graphics rendering, and built-in Google Docs support. GNOME includes various desktop applications, and it aims to make a Linux system easy to use for nonprogrammers. GNOME Tweak Tool changes the font family and size for applications windows, interface, and terminal. GNOME shell extensions are managed using a new Extensions app rather than Software. The chapter covers the features of the GNOME desktop, outlines how basic tasks are performed, and discusses some of the fundamental components of the desktop. The top panel shows the GNOME main menu bar, the date-time, and the launcher for the GNOME help system, and the bottom the panel shows us the list of open windows and the workspace switcher.
