Do we take data visualisation too seriously?
Neil Richards · 2022
This chapter discusses the trade-off between creativity and fun in data visualisation with the necessity to adhere to best practices and consider Gestalt. It encourages the reader to be creative and includes puzzle element to visualisation when considering audience does not need analytical content. It also uses a pseudo tile map from the author similar to Dorling Cartogram, suggesting parallels with the work of M.C. Escher in visual trickery. Similar examples from Bloomberg and estate agent Savills show that examples exist outside of personal portfolios.
