Freedom of Expression and Opinion

This chapter outlines the parameters of freedom of expression and opinion, before examining how freedom of expression and opinion were violated in each of the case study genocides, the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, and the Cambodian Genocide. The chapter considers control of the media, propaganda, and re-education as the main forms of violation of freedom of expression and opinion, although touches on erasure of language. This marks the start of early phrase of rights violations in the genocide process. This chapter highlights that violations freedom of expression and opinion during genocide differ from other rights violations, in that they violate the rights of the majority population and not just the targeted group.
