AbstractApplication Layer Multicast (ALM) has emerged as a serious alternative to IP multicast and Content Delivery Networks (CDN). Nonetheless, ALM systems still face some performance issues for applications like live video streaming. These problems mainly occur due to the overlay structure or the user behavior. In this paper, we focus on the later one, which deeply impacts the performance of ALM systems. We present a scalable, decentralized and generic mechanism, which enables ALM systems to estimate the user behavior in terms of peer dynamics and react proactively to minimize its impact. Moreover, we present its application to Scribe (a tree-based ALM system) for its validation.
