Designing non-fluorinated durable water repellent textiles

As the uses of long chain fluorocarbon (hept-) producing highly toxic by-product for the environment, people have to develop new material that have ‘durable water repellent’ characteristics, and do not contain fluorine in its molecules as well as achieving hydro-phobicity, oleo-phobicity, ice-phobicity and stain resistance simultaneity. In this review, we will discuss the chemistry and physical properties of hydrophobic materials for instance discussion on Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel state; manufacturing desired textiles introduces electrospinning and polyphenol chemistry; improving durability of textiles coating. And we will also discuss the future challenges for the treatments and possible uses of textiles in industry.
