Designing

Damon Kiely · 2022

This chapter empowers directors to assemble a team of designers and lead them through a collaborative process in creating the physical world of a play. The chapter is modelled on professional practices, but helps directors work on design no matter their level of production. It offers guidance on assembling a team of collaborators to help realize the production, walking students through the roles key designers play. The chapter helps directors develop a point of view around the play and effectively share that with a group of designers. It helps directors structure a first design meeting where they share visions, go over practical limitations of the production, and outline the script’s opportunities and challenges. The chapter guides the director towards leading a concepts meeting where designers share their first ideas. It offers advice on how to help designers turn initial notions into practical solutions that will bring the play to life.
