Densification of Consolidated Products
Anshuman Patra · 2022
This chapter describes the principles of densification and pore closing during sintering to clarify the controlling parameters on densification. The mechanism varies with the type of composition, i.e., either solid phase, liquid phase, or solid-liquid phase sintering. The solid-liquid surface energy, grain boundary energy and solubility of the solid in liquid impact the densification. The chapter also explains the methods to improve the density during sintering by regulating the pressure and sintering parameters. Additionally, the particle shape, size, distribution and plasticity influence the final sintered density. Finally, the densification effect in the application is described to explain product sustainability.
