Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) are a dynamic technology that allows unlicensed(secondary) users to use the allocated spectrum band when it is not in use by legitimate(primary) users. Spectrum prediction is used to reduce processing delays experienced by cognitive users while sensing the spectrum and to improve the efficiency of cognitive radio (CR) activities such as spectrum sharing and spectrum mobility. In this paper, the main objective of spectrum prediction, the traditional approaches and an overview of various Artificial intelligence (AI) based techniques used in addressing the objectives of spectrum prediction are outlined.
