The performance of visualization-a study of three modes of material representations

Yuke Li · 2021

In general terms, performance can be interpreted as an activity or a way of presenting a play by certain performers to entertain an audience. In this thesis, the performance of visualization is interpreted as a way of representing the essential property of a visualization design. More specifically, it is not only the designers who are involved in performing visualization but also the computation systems, natural sources, and audiences. This thesis aims to discuss the most appropriate utilization context of its by studying three different modes of material representation in terms of the diversity of performance: traditional digital informative visualization, environment-driven geospatial visualization, and tangible haptic data visualization. In this context, the visual design system, the environment, and audiences perform the three visualizations, respectively. These studies investigate whether the modes of material representation between data, information, and audiences have an impact on information perception. To explore how these three modes of visualization work in a contextual environment, the research, interviews, design, iterations, experiments, evaluation, and data analysis were done between 2020 and 2021. Most of the experiments were performed in the real world and led to some interesting findings and novel insights. The results suggest that the different modes of material representation and performances of visualization play essential roles in information design and the data visualization study area. There is no right or wrong option of modes, but it is crucial to make an appropriate decision based on the contextual environment. It corresponds to its contextual setting. On this basis, an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of different visualization types should be considered when designing information and data.--Author's abstract
