Achieving System Reliability Using Reliability Adjustment

Edita Djambazova · 2022

Achieving high system reliability is of utmost importance for many safety-critical applications. Dependable systems involve many tools and techniques to improve overall dependability at different system levels. Adjusting system reliability in a fault-tolerant distributed system is one of the approaches to organizing the structural redundancy in order to increase system reliability and availability. The paper studies different node redundancy distributions in a fault-tolerant real-time system with adjustable reliability. The distributions are compared to each other to see if there is a combination of system nodes that is more beneficial to the system dependability. An approach is introduced to determine which redundancy distributions achieve the desired level of system reliability. The simulation results show that the system reliability can be improved using specific distributions of node replication. There are redundancy distributions demonstrating better reliability than the traditional architecture with dual modular redundancy nodes thus giving direction to further dependability improvement.
