Virtual Reality in Psychotherapy

The current chapter covers virtual and augmented reality’s use in psychotherapy. Research on the efficacy of virtual and augmented reality in mental health treatment is reviewed and extrapolated on for consideration with young people. Case examples depicting the use of virtual reality (VR) for exposure therapy and to teach mindfulness skills are provided, including examples of guided imagery scripts for imaginal exposure. Virtual sessions and groups with young people are also discussed and explained. The chapter ends with commonly asked questions and answers about using VR in psychotherapy with young people.
