Our understanding of great school leadership is shifting. An emerging model of school leadership has at its heart problem solving supported by domain-specific knowledge. A model where leadership expertise is developed through knowledge building to create well-connected mental models that support leaders to take effective action in tackling the persistent problems of school leadership. But domain-specific knowledge can be misunderstood and this chapter explores the different types, providing a framework for subsequent chapters that supports leaders to build important formal knowledge of school improvement as well as the vital hidden knowledge of the culture and climate in their own schools.
