A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a network of sensor nodes with limited energy, memory, and computational power. It now has a wide range of applications, including military, agriculture, and the environment, among others. In a wireless environment, sensors connect with one another, therefore sensitive data is transmitted through insecure channels and exposed to several threats. There are various complex challenges associated with group communication in the network. The paper addresses the significant security requirements for group key management and insight into the techniques used. A comparative analysis is being made over the conventional schemes that have been carried out and evaluated. The paper concludes with open research discussions on optimum solutions of key costs at leave and join operations.
