The high demand for wireless devices has restricted the use of usable radio spectrum, which is a scarce resource. To prevent interference and increase spectrum saturation, the idea of cognitive radio was suggested. Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising radio technique that has a broad range of applications for increasing the efficiency of usable electromagnetic spectrum utilization. It can detect a frequency band in a systematic and intelligent manner and employ any unfilled unoccupied spectrum. Cognitive radio is a method of addressing radio spectrum difficulties by combining multiple techniques such as spectrum sensing, spectrum decision, spectrum sharing, and so on. This paper reviews the various techniques to spectrum sensing as well as the obstacles and concerns that come with their application.
