This study aims to show that rapid detection of fire risk areas in a forest can be done by keeping the forest under constant and regular surveillance by a small number of mobile wireless sensors. The proposed surveillance approach is based on continuous local path planning. We propose a genetic algorithm suitable for planning a longer path, allowing the sensor to visit a cluster of cells while traversing as many cells as possible in the cluster. The evaluation of the proposed approach shows its effectiveness in reducing environmental idleness and in quickly detecting emerging events.
