CEMI's contribution to the formation of the Runet. Infrastructure projects

The Department of Economic Informatics of the CEMI RAS has been engaged in the creation, modernization and support of the Institute's computer park for the past decades, combining it into a network and including it in the system of world information exchange. Long before the advent of the Internet and its Russian segment (Runet), the Institute's staff carried out pioneering work on the organization of telecommunications communication between CEMI and the world's leading data banks and advanced organizations. The authors, participants of this activity, describe its main stages: experiments with the IIASA Institute on the organization of two-way communication (1985-1990); connection of CEMI to EARN/BITNet networks (1992-1995) and UMOS (since 1993) and others; active assistance in the educational work of ROCIT. The planned continuation of the text will be devoted to information projects continuing from 1996 to the present.
