Moving Target Defense Techniques for the IoT

Renzo E. Navas, Laurent Toutain, Georgios Z. Papadopoulos · 2022

This chapter addresses cyberdefense techniques for the Internet of Things (IoT) based on the Moving Target Defense (MTD) paradigm. It presents general concepts from classical MTD literature and some related works. The chapter summarizes MTD techniques for the IoT and identifies potential MTD solutions for the IoT. The MTD cyberdefense paradigm is based on the principle of building mutating systems. Two important theoretical concepts of MTD systems are the attack surface and the Moving Parameter (MP) or moving target. The MP is a component of the system that will be modified and adapted over the course of time. The chapter presents the network components of IoT systems that may be suitable for MTD techniques. It also presents a generic framework that can be used to instantiate MTD strategies adapted to the IoT.
