Epidemic model on Denial of Service attack in IoT network

Sidra Kalam, Ajit Kumar Keshri · 2022

In the recent years Internet of Things (IoT) has been evolving rapidly because of its wider coverage as it can be deployed at inaccessible, rural and remote areas where human presence is difficult. IoT provides accessibility and sustainability in critical applications namely military applications, disaster management, healthcare and many more. Dependency of such critical services makes the security of the IoT devices a major concern and the surge in the number of devices makes the network vulnerable to various malicious attack. Security techniques that are implemented on various network devices are difficult to implement on IoT devices because of its resource constraint sensor nodes. Denial of service and distributed denial of service is the common security threat in IoT network. In this paper an epidemic model is developed with the quarantine compartment in the IoT network so that the network performs the operation successfully even in the case of attack. It can also reduce the rate of infection by controlling the propagation of malicious attack in the IoT network. The developed model is analysed at attack free as well as endemic equilibrium points to obtain the condition for stability. Numerical methods are used for solving the system of ordinary differential equation and simulation tools are employed for simulating the equation for validating the vitality of the developed model.
