EVCS: An Edge-assisted Virtual Computing and Storage Approach for Heterogeneous Desktop Deployment
Ming Wu, Lei Zhou, Fujin Huang · 2022
The proliferation of information technology and global-wide deployment of broadband and 5G infrastructure make computer hardware unprecedented cheap and internet access ever-increasing easy. These changes have brought an imperceptible trend that more users might have multiple computing devices together with the requirements of accessing same copy of personal software environment, or desktop, from multiple devices at geographically different locations. It's the problem of deploying desktop to heterogeneous devices. Current technologies to address the request have inevitable limitations in strong network dependency, incapable of providing near-to-native performance and user experience, or the need of specific application design. In this paper, we proposed an edge-assisted virtual computing and storage (EVCS) approach, including the novel client architecture and algorithm to adaptively execute the entire software for near-to-native performance and user experience, incremental based virtual storage mechanism, and the optimized desktop deployment workflow. The paper also provides the system evaluation to the approach, together with some forecasts along this technology.
