The Impact of Data Security on the Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) has proliferated over the years, making lives easier and more productive; simultaneously, the risk to data security on the IoT has also increased. The main purpose of this study was to determine the impact of data security on IoT. IoT is significantly used by businesses and also for personal use. Still, it is challenging to use technology that can be affected by security threats, which may compromise private or confidential information. The objectives of the study were then to determine whether the users of IoT are aware of the security threats that attack the IoT devices, to identify such security threats, to determine the effects of IoT security threats on IoT users, and to explore different ways to protect IoT devices from security threats. Quantitative methodology was used for this study where data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The results showed that security threats negatively impact the IoT and IoT devices. Lastly, users of IoT should be made aware of these security threats and how they can keep their devices safe.
