Academic literature

Daniel H. Chou, Ashwin K. Acharya · 2022

While Chapter 4 describes China&s;s talent base, this chapter examines China&s;s academic research, offering a complementary measure of China&s;s strengths in artificial intelligence (AI). Academic publications serve as an indicator of a country&s;s ability to use its talent, and as a pool of R&D knowledge that can lead to industrial applications. Accordingly, analyzing a nation&s;s published scientific output provides a window into its present and future competitiveness, along with precious details on the nature of its research. This holds for all scientific disciplines but for AI especially, which has many characteristics of a general-purpose technology—one for which fundamental insights can lead to progress in many economic sectors.
