Perceptual Reference Requires Perceptual Attribution

Tyler Burge · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2022

Chapter 5 argues in detail that perceptual reference is always guided by perceptual attribution, and that, in the case of every successful perceptual reference (perception of something), at least one perceptual attributive is accurate of the referent. The arguments are taken to be apriori. Discrimination that occurs in perceptual representation differs from other types of discrimination. Attempts to maintain that perceptual reference occurs without there being any accurate perceptual attribution to the referent are shown to be confused.
