B.A.T.M.A.N. is a established mesh routing protocol for WiFi networks. We adapted and implemented the B.A.T.M.A.N. protocol for lower end devices with MCUs and IEEE 802.15.4 transceivers - typically used for IoT devices. To evaluate the performance of the implementation we compared it to an implementation of the RPL routing protocol, which is commonly used on the targeted devices. The experiments were performed in the MIOT-Lab, a testbed with nodes distributed in a university building. The results show that B.A.T.M.A.N. can be used as an alternative routing protocol for the intended environment. The ability to establish shorter routes than RPL can be beneficial in scenarios where the majority of traffic is not routed to a central gateway node.
