Cybersecurity experts have noticed an increasing trend towards machine learning-based solutions and most of them revolve around machine learning and deep learning techniques, especially if big data management is involved. This chapter provides a clear idea of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology in smart homes by presenting the history, advantages and disadvantages, as well as the challenges of each. It explains the IoT architecture and its different layers. The four main layers are: the sensing layer, the network layer, the service layer and the application–interface layer. The chapter then looks at artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning, and the difference between them. Artificial intelligence encompasses both machine learning and deep learning. The chapter also defines deep learning and the importance of its application to cyber security in Smart Homes. It is devoted to human activity recognition in smart homes, using neural networks and deep learning.
