Continuous Microservice Re-Placement in the IoT

There is a continuous increase in processing power and a recent trend towards microservice architectures within the IoT. Both make it possible to place microservices on the distributed edge nodes of an IoT site. This creates the new challenge of identifying a suitable placement of services. Domains like cloud computing or Network Function Virtualization consider service placement as a relevant research problem for a while. However, the IoT sets special demands due to its heterogeneous and often constrained resources making cloud and NFV solutions not suitable. This paper assesses the differences between the IoT and previous placement domains. It presents a placement strategy that is adapted to the IoT.The evaluation shows that the presented traffic-based service placement strategy outperforms existing ones from other domains. This particularly holds for the optimization of the overall system’s bandwidth usage and latency.
