Cost Model for Database Reengineering from RDBMS to NoSQL

Database reengineering is a significant part of software reengineering projects. Performance degradation occurs for legacy database software as the size of database grown. Legacy database software requires regular maintenance to upkeep the software system and also such systems have technological limitations. Management has to decide whether they need database reengineering of an existing project or not. They decide it by evaluating the cost and benefit analysis of the whole database reengineering project. Therefore, there is a need for considering and identifying various factors, which may involve in calculating the cost of such projects. Estimation of reengineering project cost will help the management to decide whether only the database reengineering is required or the whole legacy software has to be re-engineered or re-developed.In this paper, we have proposed a model for estimating the cost of database reengineering from RDBMS to NoSQL database that also has legacy software. We also discuss the various cost deciding factors which needs to be considered before initiating the database reengineering project.
