With the help of sensing technologies, Wireless Sensor Networks are changing the world. WSN has grown into a powerful technology with a wide range of uses. Wireless Sensor Networks use huge numbers of resource-constrained sensors to monitor their environment, collect data, and send it to remote workstations for evaluation. As nodes in the WSN are battery operated and a lot of the battery gets exhausted when nodes move from one location to another which tends to the reduction of network lifespan as the network dies when all the nodes energy gets exhausted. Therefore, most of the today's research is focused on lowering the amount of energy required by the sensor network to extendits life and experimental analysis for this involves simulation. Simulation is the most widely used method in WSN for evaluating new standards and applications. When working with Wireless Sensor Networks, it's critical to select a simulation tool that meets the researcher's needs and allows them to conduct studies in their specific area. This research work discusses a few simulation tools along with their merits and demerits that are used for research purpose in WSN. In addition, based on the researcher's needs, the paper discussed when to employ which simulator.
