This chapter focuses on the different types of modern data communication protocols that work either at network and upper layers protocols such as routing protocols, transport protocols, and other application-specific protocols that are used by the modern data services in the environment of the latest Internet-based technologies. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a transport layer protocol that communicates with the applications working on the application layers and facilitates network layer protocol – mostly IP protocol, to transmit the data in packets without error correction and other capabilities. The TCP protocol is a bridge between the communication between applications and networks. The use of unreliable transport protocols like user datagram protocol also increases the performance and quality of the data communication due to the reduced overload on the communication link to check and acknowledge each packet as it is done in the TCP protocol.
