Bitcoin revealed to the world a consensus protocol able to validate transactions without the need of a trusted third party. But why this protocol is so amazing? One of the reasons is its peer-to-peer nature : a fully decentralized protocol that allows transactions to be securely validated in an open network where participants can join and leave at will. Actually, before Bitcoin, Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus protocols already emerged in the distributed computing field, but in the scope of closed networks with a fixed number of participants.
