Reliability, availability and maintainability of biometrics

This article highlights three aspects of biometric applications that are not often discussed, despite their importance – reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM). In particular this article is useful for CIOs and CSOs of end-user organizations in charge of procurements, planning or specifying requirements as well as system administrators, operators and first-line support personnel in charge of day-to-day maintenance and management of biometric applications. The document explains the fundamental basis of RAM in the context of biometrics and is intended to be used as a guideline on what to consider and how to formulate base requirements and how to evaluate real-world performance metrics in order to support end-user business objectives.
