Identifying and Defending Against Vulnerabilities
Charles J. Brooks, Christopher Grow, Philip Craig, Donald Short · Cybersecurity · 2018
Vulnerabilities can be discovered a number of ways. This chapter introduces several different types of network vulnerabilities and associated attack types as they apply to local area network connectivity devices. Adobe has done an admirable job trying to keep up with new zero day vulnerabilities, but they have not been winning this war by any means. PHP-based software such as WordPress, WordPress plugins, or PHPMyAdmin have frequent updates as new exploits are discovered frequently. While some exploits may do nothing more than inject advertising into the browser, others install ransomware on vulnerable computers. Java may be targeted with exploits more than any other software package. As traditional security improves and network exploits are increasingly difficult to implement, hackers are turning to psychological manipulation to achieve their goals. Some social engineering deceptions are so realistic it is only with extreme scrutiny that they can be recognized.
