History of EDCC, the European Dependable Computing Conference

2014

The relevance of research in the areas of fault-tolerance and dependability has been recognized as strategic in Europe since the 1970's, and Europe has been very active in such fields, trying to create connections and co-operation among scientists, even during the period of political separation of Europe into Eastern and Western blocks. This year we are celebrating the 10th edition of the European Dependable Computing Conference series, which corresponds to 20th year of its existence.EDCC resulted from the merging of two former European conference series on fault tolerance and dependability:  The International Conference on Fault Tolerant Systems and Diagnostics (FTSD), held in the countries of Eastern Europe (the former Czechoslovakia, Poland, Bulgaria, and the former GDR), from 1978 to 1990.A precursor of FTSD series was held in Poland in 1976 with "Fault Tolerant Computing" as part of the title of the Conference. The International Conference on Fault Tolerant Computing Systems (FTCS 1 ), held in the Federal Republic of Germany, organized by the German Technical interest group "Fault-Tolerant Computing Systems" GI/NTG/GMR and later GI/ITG/GMA from 1982 to 1991.A precursor of the FTCS series was held in 1981 in the FRG with "Fault Tolerance" as part of the title of the Workshop.
