Fundamental Networking and Security Tools

Nadean H. Tanner · 2019

This chapter describes the fundamental networking and security tools in information technology. These include Packet InterNet Groper (Ping), IPConfig, Tracert, NSLookup, NetStat and PuTTY. Ping, is a networking utility. It is used to test whether a host is “alive” on an internet protocol (IP) network. A lot of valuable knowledge can be gleaned from ipconfig. Internet Protocol (IP) has the function of taking packets from the source host and delivering them to the proper destination host based on the IP addresses in a packet. The main use of nslookup is to help with any domain name system issues the cybersecurity professional may have. They can use it to find the IP address of a host, find the domain name of an IP address, or find mail servers on a domain. NetStat is a network utility tool that displays networking connections, routing tables, and some other details such as protocol statistics.
