The basic functions of a product were identified as long ago as in antiquity, when the roman architect and engineer Vitruvio (1955) proposed that a product be perceived, at least, according to three functions: the practical ( Utilitas ), the aesthetic ( Venustas ), and the technical ( Firmitas ).
