Reconfigurable Electronics
Jhonathan P. Rojas · 2019
This chapter introduces reconfigurable electronics as an evolving concept that it is constantly adapting to the demands of new technologies. It will cover important considerations in the design and development of such future technologies, such as wearable electronics, bio-integrated systems, cybernetics, or robotics, bearing in mind the new mechanical demands and opportunities of these rising applications. Different approaches and materials will be covered as well as some important mechanical considerations and novel applications. Starting with some initial thoughts in reconfigurable computing, the chapter will continue with an overview of different levels of reconfiguration, going from macro-size to micro and nano-dimensions. Later, material reconfiguration is shown with transient electronics, and structural reconfiguration will demonstrate the way towards mechanical adaptability. Overall, the continuous rise of resourceful techniques for the efficient integration of materials validates the idea that the concept of reconfiguration is always evolving. This will open up the door for more innovative solutions and applications that are still more novel.
