WLAN Deployment and Vertical Markets

David D Coleman, David A Westcott · 2018

This chapter focuses on environments where wireless networks are commonly deployed, considering the advantages and disadvantages of wireless in various WLAN vertical markets along with areas of concern. The chapter also discusses the major commercial WLAN vendors and provides links to their websites. The transmission of video is typically more complex than voice. In addition to multiple streams of data for video and voice, video often includes streams for setting up and tearing down the connection. Location-based technology has garnered a lot of attention in WLAN designs. Most manufacturers of enterprise WLAN systems tout some sort of location capability with their products. Some have features that are built in, whereas others offer integration hooks to third-party vendors who specialize in location technology and have sophisticated software applications related to specific industry vertical markets. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) wireless technology is now being used for many new applications in retail and other commercial enterprises. iBeacons require an application on a mobile device to trigger an action. The trigger occurs whenever a smart phone with a BLE receiver radio is within proximity range of an iBeacon transmitter.
