When we reviewed the biometrics industry back in 1999, the market landscape was a world away from how it stands today. The terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 hadn't taken place and government enthusiasm for biometric technology was muted. Now, with ePassports taking off globally and national ID cards becoming a reality in a number of countries, industry focus has shifted. But despite the fact that citizens are starting to embrace the technology, some privacy groups still regard its implementation as controversial.
