The articles in this special section focus on new trends in wireless communications. Mobile services continue to have a dramatic impact on every area that it touches. After changing the way people live, one of the next frontiers is advanced manufacturing. The industrial automation infrastructure will seamlessly integrate wireless (and wired!) sensors, actuators, and controllers. Among the 5G use cases are ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) that enable Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Furthermore, integration with wireline networks for the purpose of industrial automation requires highly accurate timing information and synchronization.
