Cybercrime Offenses
Graeme Edwards · 2019
This chapter presents to the investigator an understanding of the many forms of cybercrime they may be required to investigate. While there are many forms of civil and criminal offenses involving technology, it lists examples of offenses where technology is a major factor in the crime the cyber investigator is required to respond to. Also understand that when investigator is dealing with a cyber event and the suspect lives in a foreign legal jurisdiction, even though their action may be a very serious criminal or civil offense in his/her jurisdiction, the act may not be an offense in their country. In effect, in their jurisdiction they are doing nothing wrong. An effective form of cyber-attack is the taking control of the website of a legitimate company, installing malicious software, and waiting for visitors to the site. Investigating this form of cybercrime involves gaining an understanding of the technical vulnerabilities of the site exploited.
