In some monitoring sensor networks, event-driven data transmission and clustering are adopted to reduce energy consumption. When an event occurs, the sensor nodes in the event area form a cluster and transmit data to the cluster head (CH), and then the CH fuses the data and sends it to the sink node. As the event moves, the cluster needs to be reformed and the CH has to be dynamically updated. This paper proposes a dynamic clustering scheme based on node compactness (DCND) for event-driven wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with uneven node distribution. In order to reduce the energy consumption of the network and improve energy efficiency, a CH selection strategy based on node compactness is developed. The compactness of each sensor node in the event area is calculated, and the node with the largest compactness is selected as the CH. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can balance and reduce network energy consumption, and extend the life cycle of the network.
