e-passports – part 1
Biometric Technology Today · 2004
The prospect of e-passports being introduced complete with biometric identifiers has got closer over the last few years. Driven forward by factors including legislative deadlines and the need to enhance border security, the next year should see some of the world's citizens using the technology for real. Meanwhile, trials are underway looking at issues, such as interoperability, change needed to existing processes and the accuracy of the technology. There are bottlenecks, however, and problems must still be overcome before the smooth introduction of e-passports becomes feasible. This is part one of a survey into all the major e-passport issues. This month we introduce the subject and follow up in next month's issue with a more detailed assessment of the major players and activities worldwide.
