Functional Logics

Michael Olorunfunmi Kolawole · Electronics · 2020

This chapter explains what logic gates (or simply gates) are, how their functions can be represented with Boolean expressions and/or truth tables, how digital circuits are designed as a hierarchical structure of functional blocks where each functional block is decomposed into sub-functional blocks until the individual parts are reached, and how simple designs are formulated and used to build more complex digital logic circuits. The use of sum-of-products to implement circuits shown in this chapter is not necessarily optimal in time (depth of circuit) and in space (number of switches). The use of the truth table (or Karnaugh map), which is another method of minimizing Boolean equation as well as the issue of speed (performance), is not exploited in this chapter. Instead, the chapter explains in great depth combinational and sequential logics laying the foundations for the design of digital logic circuits, knowing fully the occurrence of sequential machines in nearly every chip design.
