Why Trust?
Mike Bursell · 2020
One important topic in computer professionals' discussion of trust is security. Their core interest, of course, is security in the realm of computing systems, sometimes referred to as cyber-security or information technology (IT) security. Confidentiality is a property that is often required for certain components of a computer system. One lesson computer professionals can learn from the world of cryptography is that while using it should be easy, designing cryptographic algorithms is often very hard. Risk is a key concept to be able to consider when we are talking about security. Risk is all around us and has been since before humans became truly human, living in groups and inhabiting a social structure. Many of the risks associated with interacting with other humans fit within the category: difficult to assess and difficult to mitigate. Risk is important in the world of IT and computing.
