Haematology Analyser, Handheld

Raghbir Singh Khandpur · Compendium of Biomedical Instrumentation · 2019

This chapter discusses the purpose, principle of operation, specifications, and applications of portable, handheld haematology analyser. The portable, handheld haematology analyser is useful for small clinics and point-of-care applications. The portable, handheld haematology analyser provides true automation without the error that is encountered in vision-based systems and allow point-of-care testing (POCT). The handheld instruments incorporate the ease of automated instrumentation and accuracy of Coulter principle. The POCT haematology analysers are designed for the same purposes as laboratory-type centralized systems, but the capability to use capillary blood from a fingerprick is a major advantage in these POCT devices. The palmtop-type blood cell counting devices are again based on Coulter counter principle and use micro-electro-mechanical systems technology for miniaturization. The portable blood cell counters deliver rapid cell counts in a handheld, easy-to-use format.
