Barriers to Implementing Hardware Reliability and Software Quality

Mark A. Levin, Ted T. Kalal, Jonathan Rodin · 2019

Understanding the difference between quality and reliability is the key, because if one does not understand the difference, he/she may just be improving his/her product quality while not impacting his/her product's overall reliability at all. After gathering the data and analyzing the information of failures, corrections, and the related processes, there will be a better understanding of where to start the reliability improvement process. The barriers one encounters will be both internal and external. The internal barriers will be the most difficult to overcome, and they are real. The external barriers are less significant. The chapter shows that many of them are based on invalid perceptions. It begins by first discussing the internal barriers and suggests ways to break them down. Then, the chapter explains five perceived external barriers facing companies that want to implement reliability. Improving software quality requires changes to the software development process and the software development culture.
